Cerebral vasculature in schizophrenia
Although only a limited number of studies have been published, clinical, preclinical and post-mortem studies all point towards an aberrant cerebral vasculature in schizophrenia patients compared to controls. Post-mortem research is the only way to directly investigate the vascular network on a molecular level. Especially these kinds of studies are very limited, and actually only a few growth factors have been investigated, such as VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor).
This project aims to investigate the changes in vaculature in schizophrenia patients. To do this, we focus on density and premeability of blood vessels, number of epithelial cells and their proliferation/apoptosis, and the impact of anti-psychotic medication.
